For my Reamping project I re-recorded three guitar tracks from Capital University Professor Chad Loughriges’ song, Network. In the song there’s a main lead guitar, and two rhythm guitar tracks that are completely identical. For the main guitar or, GTR1, I decided to use the back stairwell (again) for creating the alternative tone for that guitar. To do this I set the output of that track to Phones 3 routed that signal out of Pro Tools through the patch bay using channel 11 of PT B Out 1-8 to Aux 15. This routed the signal within Pro-tools to the Aux 15 quarter inch input out in the hall way. With the Radical X-Amp, Reamping Device I was able to further route the guitar signal in Pro Tools to an actual guitar amp in the stairwell. Playing with the settings on the amp I increased the Intensity & Speed settings to create a sort of surf rock tremolo feel for the guitar. I used a Blue Kiwi microphone set to Omni as a room mic in order to get a deep reverb along with the tremolo.
For the GTR DI and GTR dbl tracks I decided to record those track in the live room of Studio E, rather than the back stair well. As a result I needed to send the signal from Aux 15 to Aux 5. I also switched the outputs on the GTR DI and GTR dbl tracks to phones 3. For these tracks the objective was to record them clean, so after listening to the guitar tracks in Pro-tools I did my best to get them as close to the original tracks. To do this I used the AEA r84 ribbon mic, going through a UA 4-710d pre amp. After recording the tracks, I panned them hard left and right to create a wide stereo image of the two guitars.
I thought the overall mix worked out well, the GTR1 track sits nicely in the back of the mix, while the panned guitars are a bit beefer and more present. It added another element to the song to make it sound like a unique alternative to the original mix. I personally had a blast doing this assignment, and I’m now personally invested in further developing this skill to strengthen future projects!
